* FILIPPI, Filippo de (1869-1938). The Ascent of Mount St. Elias, Alaska, by H.R.H. Prince Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi. London: Constable, 1900. 4to (268 x 187 mm). 34 photogravure plates, 4 folding panoramas, 2 color-printed folding maps, numerous half-tone illustrations in text. Publisher's green gilt-lettered cloth (spine ends with a few minor breaks). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of the successful first ascent of the 18,000-foot peak on the Alaska-Canadian border by the great Italian Alpinist. Most of the photographic illustrations were by the great mountain photographer, Vittoria Sella. First published in Italian the same year. AN UNUSUALLY SOUND COPY, as most copies of this edition are found rebound or rebacked (or with contents shaken loose) due to the fragile nature of the gutta percha used in the original binding. Neate F24; Perret 1655. Estimate $400-600
