FILLMORE, Millard, President (1800-1874). Autograph letter signed ("Millard Fillmore") to the Whig Committee of Philadelphia, Albany, [NY], 26 June 1848. 1½ pages, 4to, on light blue paper, imprint of campaign stamp at top left ("For President Gen. Taylor 1849"), integral blank. FILLMORE ON PHILADELPHIA: "THE PLACE WHICH YOU OCCUPY IS CONSECRATED GROUND." Just a few months after his nomination as vice presidential candidate, Fillmore declines an invitation from the Whigs of Philadelphia to visit on Independence Day. His response glorifies the city: "You offer many temptations to comply with your request. The place which you occupy is consecrated ground, sacred to the cause of liberty, where Independence had its birth, and the temple still stands in which it was cradled. The known hospitality and patriotism of your citizens, and the prospect of meeting a few valued and esteemed friends, all conspire to urge an acceptance." However, Fillmore indicates that he must decline for "official duties [he was serving as Comptroller of New York State] require my constant attention here." Fillmore's nomination at the Whig national convention in Philadelphia was intended to balance the ticket with a northern pro-Clay candidate. Fillmore did not even meet presidential candidate Zachary Taylor until after the election and played little part in the administration. His fortunes changed, however, on July 9, 1850 when Taylor's death catapulted Fillmore into the presidency.
