Fine. "I NOW THINK...WE CAN CARRY THIS STATE FOR MR. CLAY...CONNECTICUT MUST BE WHIG!" An excited letter to a fellow Whig Congressman, just two months before he became the Whig vice-presidential nominee: "I have neglected to write you...because I had nothing worth communicating...We have now however held our charter election, and what we have to say to our Whig friends in Connecticut is, 'go and do likewise.' We have elected our Mayor by more than 200 majority, making a change of more than 600 since last spring. Glory enough for one day. Our town elections are also going well in this part of the state and I hope they readily exercise a salutary influence on the coming elections in Connecticut. I now think with judicious management and great exertions we can carry this state for Mr. [Henry] Clay and I think we give you the evidence of it in our Spring elections. I am happy to see so much spirit in Connecticut. Your Young men's convention must have been a noble one. I wish I could have been there as a spectator. The scene was one that would make any true Whig feel a thrill of delight. We wait anxiously the result. Con[necticu]t must be Whig!!! ..." Fillmore was the Whig vice-presidential candidate on Clay's ticket in the November 1844 election; Clay (and Fillmore) lost to Polk in a close election. Fillmore was also the Whig nominee for Governor of New York, but despite the optimism of this letter, he was defeated in both state and national elections.
