This exceptional rug may have been woven in the small town of Sarouk where some very fine pieces with tightly clipped pile were woven in the 19th C. The ground colour was often white, usually with a contrasting dark border and decorated in glowing colours of yellows, greens and reds. This rug features the herati field design, incorporating bird and animal filler motifs.
