Fine Antique Ferahan Sarouk rug, Ferahan district, West Persia (Iran), Ca 1875-1890. This exceptional rug may have been woven in the small town of Sarouk where some very fine pieces with tightly clipped pile were woven in the 19th C. The ground colour was often white, usually with a contrasting dark border and decorated in glowing colours of yellows, greens and reds. This rug features the herati field design, incorporating bird and animal filler motifs. The rug brings to mind the famous quotation by Paul Gaugain, speaking to his students: ''Oh, you painters who ask for a technique of colour - study carpets and there you shall find all knowledge'' Ref: E.
