Fine Japanese Meiji period Shibayama three case ivory Inro, 19th century, the carved and incised case decorated with karashishi (Chinese lion) one side travelling up and the opposing side down among a rocky base and a tall flowering tree with leaves of inlaid mother of pearl, coral and shell, the eyes of inlaid horn; together with an oval ivory bead ojime, the base of the Inro with a sticker of the Tomkinson Collection and numbered 311, 9.5cm high Provenance: Tomkinson Collection, #311 Avery Brunage, Asian Art Museum (SD29) The Michael Tomkinson collection (1841-1921) was one of the finest collections of Japanese Art formed in the Victorian period and the collection formed the book Specimens of Japanese art: from the collection of Michael Tomkinson, published in 1899, the piece on offer in this catalogue can be seen on page 126 and numbered 311
