Beschreibung:

Comprising an impressive and finely painted icon of a less frequently encountered subject - The Finding In The Temple. The feast day associated with this icon is called Mid-Pentecost, which occurs on the 25th day after Easter and is the halfway point between Easter (Pascha) and Pentecost. Here, Christ is shown at center seated on a raised dais surrounded by the elders who express gestures of questioning and receiving answers. Some (upper right) also whisper to one another, marveling at Jesus' questions and answers. Christ holds an open book of gospels which is inscribed with the text taken from John 7:16-18 "My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me. If any man will do His will he shall know of the teaching, whether it be from God, or whether I am speaking on my own authority. He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory." At the upper left are added the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The title for this icon given on the upper margin in an abbreviated, condensed form of Old Church Slovanic reads "Entrance of Our Lord Jesus Christ into the Temple on the Day of the Middle." In this case the "Middle" means the middle of the feast, or Mid-Pentecost. The overall quality, style, palette and calligraphy clearly suggest the offered icon was produced in the village of Palekh or by a Palekh trained iconographer. 15.75 inches x 12.9 inches (40 x 32.5 cm).
