BIBLE, in Spanish. [Basel: Samuel Apiarius for T. Guarinus], 1569. First edition of the complete Bible in Spanish, translated by the heretical monk Cassiodoro de Reina. After being denounced for converting to Protestantism, Cassiodoro fled Spain with his family and began translating the Bible. Rather than simply a vernacular translation of the Vulgate Bible, de Reina's work is based on the Hebrew text of the Old Testament and Erasmus's Textus Receptus. As with many copies, the present is found without the supplemental section "Annotationes" at end; Darlow and Moule's variant A with typographical ornament on title-page. Adams B1206; Darlow & Moule 8472; Palau 28941. Quarto (236 x 170mm). Lacking 3 leaves of the "annotationes" as often. Title page with bear device of Samuel Apiarius, two large woodcut illustrations in the preface, numerous woodcut initials (title page dustsoiled, some browning and staining throughout, some dampstains, tape repair to outer edge of errata leaf, final leaf laid down with bottom 3/4 cut away). 18th-century calf, edges red (rebacked with endleaves renewed, text block cracked). Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
