Lot comprising the Spanish Steam Frigate Almansa, the Royal Navy Armored Frigate HMS Northumberland, and three American warships including USS Aroostook, USS Selago, and another steam gunboat unidentified. The Aroostook and Northumberland are period copy photographs of the actual ships. The other three CDV's are copies from contemporary paintings. The Almansa participated in the obscure Chincha Islands War against Peru. On May 2, 1866, a Spanish squadron bombarded Peruvian fortifications at the city of Calleo and then withdrew without appreciable results. The photograph of the Aroostook with South African back mark is dated "May 1867" with inked notations and owner's name and rank, Joseph Foster, Asst. Paymaster. HMS Northumberland is dated "July 20, 1870," taken at Plymouth. Provenance: The Tom MacDonald Maine Civil War CDV Collection Condition: Cartes all G+ with minor edge wear.
