(Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings & Works of Art from 1600, 4th September 2019) PAINTED PRESS CUPBOARD, DECORATED BY ALEXANDER JOHNSTON (1815-1891) 19TH CENTURY the upper part with a pair of twin panel doors painted with scenes of putti, opening to a shelved interior; the lower part with three long drawers painted with gold swags, scrolls and hippocamps, against a red ground, above a shaped apron and bracket feet 111cm wide, 209cm high, 55cm deep Provenance: Painted by Alexander Johnston then by family descent. Note: Alexander Johnston was an Edinburgh-born artist, known for his portraits, genre and history paintings. In 1836 Johnston entered the schools of the Royal Academy under William Hilton and in the following years exhibited his work there. Although he settled in London, the north continued to inspire his paintings, which were often based on Scottish literature or historical events.
