FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "To Margaret Anderson who wrote it! from Ian Fleming" and further signed by the recipient "Margaret Anderson finished 5/5/1962." Margaret Anderson was employed by Ian Fleming as a typist and copyist during the early sixties. Included in the lot are 15 typed letters signed by Beryl Griffie-Williams, Ian Fleming's Secretary, to Margaret Anderson, dated variously from 15th December 1960 to 2nd April 1963. They provide a fascinating insight into the sometimes rewarding, sometimes frustrating, process of typing and editing Fleming's manuscripts. "Unfortunately he [Ian Fleming] has made a further insert to Chapter 3, and if you can squash it on one page I suppose that would be all right ..." (20th December 1960). "Yes, I do have a gold plated typewriter apparently there are only two in existence and the Duke of Windsor has the other. Actually it is a beastly machine and quite inadequate for the work I have to do on it, and now Mr Fleming says the type is too small for him to see!" (29th December 1960). The typewriter was sold in these rooms on May 5, 1995, for £50,000. "Mr Fleming has asked me to send you the enclosed cheque for £5, as he was so delighted with your editing ... I have sent your name and address to a friend of Mr Fleming's, Admiral Godfrey, so he may get in touch with you. He is a charmer and I call him 'M'!" (1st November 1961). A number of typed copies of letters from Margaret Anderson are also included, most to Beryl Griffie-Williams, but including one to Ian Fleming responding to his request for a critique of The Spy Who Loved Me.
