Provenance : Jo Bryce (presentation inscription from the author). FIRST EDITION. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO THE WIFE OF THE DEDICATEE on the front free endpaper: "To Jo Who knows the main characters! From Ian 1956." Jo Bryce’s diamond, “Afghanistan,” is depicted on the dust jacket for this work, and it was at Ivar and Jo Bryce’s Black Hole Hollow Farm in Vermont where Fleming first thought of the plot for Diamonds are Forever . In his later work, For Your Eyes Only , Fleming sets the action around Echo Park in Vermont, based on Black Hole Hollow Farm, of which Fleming was a frequent guest. This is one of only three Fleming novels with a printed dedication. In his own copy of Diamonds are Forever (now with his books and papers at the Lilly Library) Fleming partially explains the printed dedication: "This was written in January and February, 1955 at Goldeneye. It is dedicated to Ivar Bryce, Ernest Cuneo (Cuneo the cab-driver) and Billy Woodward, who was shot by his wife on Long Island--a famous case--while the proofs were being corrected. He vetted the racing sequences. He owned Nashua, a famous 2 year old. Felix Leiter is based on no one." (Fleming exhibit catalogue, The Lilly Library, 1963).
