FLETCHER, Richard. The Vertues of that well known and often-experienced Medicine Fletchers Powder . London: Thomas James for the Author, 1677. 2 copies, broadside (342 x 228mm), (both copies with stab-holes, one copy with piece torn from margin with loss of a few words), disbound. FIRST EDITION of this entertaining nonsense. Fletcher, author of several other pieces of quackery, claims that his powder will cure, inter alia , apoplexy, leprosy, scurvy, smallpox, measles, rickets and fistulas and even 'other diseases than those afore-mentioned, either Internal or External, within the Reach of Medicine, of what Nature or Kind soever, may be cured by this Medicine'. He also maintains that it will stay fresh for a thousand years. There is a long list of booksellers, grocers, haberdashers &c. in England, Scotland and Ireland where the powder may be procured and a price-list (one shilling for a quarter packet up to four shillings for a whole packet). The broadside was reprinted in 1679. Wing F1359B (Harvard only); not in Wellcome. (2)
