FLIGHT INTO EGYPT, large miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
FLIGHT INTO EGYPT, large miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [central France, 1440-50s] 208 x 146mm. Large arch-topped miniature framed with pink and burnished gold, with text and three-line initial of blue with trefoil infill on burnished gold ground within accompanying three-quarter patterned bar-border, full-page border of scrolling blue and gold acanthus and naturalistic flowers on hairline tendrils with gold disk terminals, inhabited by a peasant upper right, and a bird in the lower margin, extending beyond the border frame. 15 lines, rubrics in red, one- and two-line initials of burnished gold, dark pink and blue with similar line-endings (very slight pigment loss, affecting Virgin's robe and bird).
