Title: Flora Virginica exhibens plantas... Author: Clayton, John & J.F. Gronovius Place: Leiden Publisher: Date: 1762 Description: [12], 176, [8] pp. Copper-engraved folding map. (4to) 10x8¼, period half vellum and marbled boards. Second Edition. Second, revised edition, with the first appearance of the map of Clayton's travels: “an important 18th century map of Virginia” (Hunt). Clayton was seldom north of the Rappahannock or south of the James; “his knowledge of the mountains did not extend beyond the Blue Ridge. He was thorough, however, in his exploration of the middle Tidewater districts, and recent botanical work shows that as a field botanist he was more astute than has been realized" (DAB). This edition is important also as it was revised after the 1753 edition of Linnaeus's Species Plantarum, and incorporates the Linnaean system of modern botany. This copy with armorial bookplate of Joseph Rowe Webster. Hunt 571; Sabin 28924. Lot Amendments Condition: Back cover with dampwrinkling; pale dampstain throughout (heavier at ends), some very mild spotting to map; still an attractive copy, very good or better. Item number: 158272
