Apollo 11 LM Lunar Surface Checklist, pp SUR-52/SUR-53, a single sheet printed recto and verso. NASA/MSC, June 16, 1969, revised July 8, 1969. 8 by 5½ inches, inscribed in ink by Aldrin. With a Typed Letter Signed by Aldrin. This sheet is part of the entire checklist that outlined the steps Armstrong and Aldrin were to perform just after the lunar landing and tasks prior to exiting Eagle to walk on the moon. Other parts of this checklist provided steps for placing Eagle in the proper configuration to leave the moon and return safely to Michael Collins in lunar orbit. This sheet contains some of the few notes recorded by the crew while they were the first humans on another celestial body. BUZZ ALDRIN'S signed letter reads in part: "This sheet has some extensive mission notes made while on the Moon just hours after history's first lunar surface exploration. Side SUR-52 has the steps Neil Armstrong performed to prepare for Lunar Module Eagle's liftoff from the Moon. He ran tests on the Rendezvous Radar (RR) as Mike Collins in Command Module Columbia passed overhead while in lunar orbit. I logged the values of '19570, 1955' to compare with the printed values on this sheet. The telemetry '477 TM 475' were the values I logged once the radar gave us a good lock on Columbia. Neil then started the test of our attitude control system including the RCS or Reaction Control Subsystem. These were the groups of four small rocket engines placed at four points on the Ascent Stage. Side SUR-53 has the ATTITUDE CONTROL steps that Neil performed while I made the six check marks after each step was completed. I made the note of 'all red flags' to record that we got the expected red flags once Neil reached the 'hardover'' position using the Attitude Controller Assembly (ACA) during the test. We were almost 2 hours away from lunar liftoff when Neil and I started an alignment of our navigational platform. I recorded the gyroscope coefficients of '-34, +08, -46' during this process and then recorded the next set of '-40, +03, -49.' A few hours earlier, after we returned to the LM interior once completing the first lunar moon walk, I noticed that the ascent engine arming breaker push/pull switch was broken. Apparently during movement wearing our large space suit 'backpacks,' either Neil or I bumped into this panel and broke off that particular switch. This switch was the direct means of arming our Ascent Stage engine which would allow us to leave the lunar surface. Mission Control verified that the switch was open, meaning that the engine was currently unarmed. If we could not get the engine armed, we would be stranded on the Moon. They advised us to leave the switch in the open position until the timeline called for it to be engaged. I started to think of ways to activate the switch if pushing it by hand failed. As it turned out, the very pen I used to record these notes was the perfect tool to engage this circuit breaker." Aldrin has INSCRIBED AND SIGNED page SUR-52 with "Notes by Buzz Aldrin." On side SUR-53 he has INSCRIBED AND SIGNED "Notes made by myself while on the lunar surface during Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin."
