FLOWN ON APOLLO 11 – Apollo 11 LM G and N Dictionary. Page S-3 . NASA/MSC, 29 May 1969. "One of the few celestial aids we had on the lunar surface." A star chart used to determine Eagle's position on the Moon, not long after the landing. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Buzz ALDRIN, above the two star charts: " Flown to the lunar surface on Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin ." Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had just made history with the first manned lunar landing. They then secured Eagle’s systems and received verification from Mission Control that they could remain on the Moon for at least two hours. During this period they began a simulated countdown in case they needed to leave at the end of those two hours. Part of this process was taking star sightings to determine their exact position on the Moon. This was even more important because difficulties during the landing sequence caused them to land almost 4 miles beyond the planned target. Star charts such as this assisted their work to realign Eagle’s guidance platform to be able to properly rendezvous with Columbia in lunar orbit if required to do so within the first two hours on the Moon. Mission Control verified later that they could stay as planned on the Moon and begin preparations to start their moon walk activities. [With:] Buzz ALDRIN's SIGNED provenance letter, reading in part: "Accompanying this letter is a page numbered S-3 from the Apollo 11 LM G and N Dictionary. This page was one of the few celestial aids we had on the lunar surface. The star charts list critical navigation stars and their associated computer code. The left side of this page outlines important southern stars and constellations including Scorpius and Sagittarius. The right side has key northern stars and constellations such as Cygnus, Cassiopeia, and Ursa Major." Single sheet, 5.5 by 8 inches, printed recto only.
