FLOWN ON APOLLO 13 – Cloth mission emblem. Flown Apollo 13 emblem that survived the spacecraft explosion. Featuring three horses traveling from the Earth to the Moon with the Sun in the background. “Ex Luna, Scientia” is Latin for “From the Moon, Knowledge.” The emblem is mounted on a typed letter SIGNED by James LOVELL which reads: " The attached patch was flown aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft on its flight around the moon April 11-17, 1970. This patch was designed by the artist Luman Winter after a mural he painted for the St. Regis Hotel in New York City ." Cloth emblem, 4 inches in diameter. [With:] Black and white photograph. 7 inches square. SIGNED and INSCRIBED: "BOOM! The Apollo 13 SM, Fred Haise, Apollo 13 LMP." The photograph reveals the damaged Service Module (SM) and the aftermath of the oxygen tank explosion, taken moments after the SM was released from the Command Module before re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. An entire outer panel is shown blown off. All archivally matted to 11 by 20 inches.
