FOLKARD, Henry Coleman. The Wild-Fowler: a Treatise on Ancient and Modern Wild-Fowling, Historical and Practical . London: Piper, Stephenson, and Spence, 1859. 8° (212 x 141mm). Engraved frontispiece, title and 11 plates, wood-engraved illustrations. A Cosway-style binding in 20th-century dark green morocco gilt by Bayntun (Riviere), upper cover with inset original oval miniature of a cavalier, returned home from a successful shooting expedition, greeting his wife, the miniature surrounded with gilt-tooled border, with two large gilt wild-fowling tools above and below, all within an outer border of gilt-tooled decoration of stylized foliage and flowerheads, within double fillets, the lower cover with similar gilt decorated outer border, surrounding a large central design built around a shield shape containing a single large tool of a wild-fowler carrying a gun, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with repeat overall decoration of various volutes and other small tools, gilt turn-ins, watered-silk endleaves, gilt edges.
