Fordham, Sir Herbert George A COLLECTION OF PRINTED BOOKS, PAMPHLETS AND OFFPRINTS BY H.G. FORDHAM, INCLUDING TRANSACTIONS OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY; AUTOGRAPH AND TYPED NOTES AND LISTS BY FORDHAM; 2 COPPER-PLATES MOUNTED ON WOOD WITH FORDHAM'S PORTRAIT; AND A FEW OTHER ITEMS This collection was acquired by John Henshall from George Fordham's son and was the basis for Henshall's article in The Map Collectors’ Circle (no.51, 1969) entitled Sir H. George Fordham Carto-bibliographer which includes a bibliography of Fordham's works relating to cartography and topography (as well as a reprint of Fordham's Christopher Saxton of Dunningley). Henshall writes in his introduction, “Many of the works of Sir George Fordham are well known to students of cartography; he may rightly be called the founder of modern British carto-bibliography for he was the first to attempt the systematic cataloguing of the maps of an English county, and consequently the inspiration of many others who proceeded to produce similar lists. To characterise this type of work he coined the very phrase “carto-bibliography”. Through his industry and devotion to the subject of cartography we are endowed with an abundance of valuable material, and although many of his fields of research are still relatively neglected, others have formed the bases of later research and analysis”. The collection includes: 1. Over 100 printed books, pamphlets and offprints by H.G. Fordham, including Transactions of the Bibliographical Society, ranging from single leaves to bound books, representing most of the works listed by Henshall in his bibliography of Fordham in The Map Collectors' Circle, including duplicates, and a bound copy of Henshall's work. 2. Fordham's manuscript library list, used and added to by him over a period of time, bound; his manuscript list of his own publications (added to by his son); manuscript and typed lecture notes, including 'Syllabus of four lectures on some famous map-makers... Saxton... Norden... Sanson [&c.]'; Deed Poll of H.G. Fordham dated 17 Dec. 1927 establishing ''The Fordham Fund'' for the encouragement of the study of carto-bibliography; correspondence with the Royal Geographical Society (to whom Fordham was a generous benefactor).
