Formerly the Property of Mr. John Calley
Formerly the Property of Mr. John Calley 1955 MERCEDES-BENZ 300Sc CABRIOLET A COACHWORK BY DAIMLER BENZ, SINDELFINGEN Chassis No. 188.013.5500028 Engine No. 199.980.5500028 Ivory with chocolate leather interior and chocolate soft top Engine: six cylinder, in-line, single overhead camshaft, direct fuel injection, 2,996cc, 175bhp at 5,400rpm; Gearbox: four-speed manual column change; Suspension: front, independent with coil springs, rear, single pivot swing axle and coil springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drum with servo. Left hand drive. First exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1951, the 300S model Mercedes-Benz was designed for the discriminating sports car enthusiast. The car set new standards of excellence far above contemporary cars of the day. Three body styles were available, the Coupe, Roadster and Cabriolet and each car was hand-finished to exacting standards. The interior design and fittings were of the finest materials. For example, the dashboard with full complement of instruments was of Carpathian burled elm wood. Top grade leather adorned the cabin and luxury pile carpet was used throughout. The Cabriolet featured a fully padded convertible top. Personal luggage fitted neatly between the two spare wheels in the boot. Priced at $14,000, the Mercedes was built to bespoke standards and showed it handsomely. The Sc was available from 1955, again in three body styles, but fitted now with Bosch fuel injection that gave the motor 175bhp and 100mph performance. Just 200 of the Sc models were built, the breakdown being 98 Coupes, 49 Cabriolets and 53 Roadsters. The 300Sc Christie's is pleased to present today is one of the just 49 examples produced. Given the size, comfort, design and interior appointments it's hard to believe production was limited to just these few examples. However, today they are becoming more and more sought after in the collector car marketplace. While the original history of this 300Sc is unknown, it has been confirmed as having spent time in the personal collection of producer and studio executive Mr. John Calley. The now current owner purchased this car approximately 20 years ago directly from Mr. Calley who was then the President of Warner Brothers. At this time the 300Sc was in the process of a complete restoration in Los Angeles. Upon purchase the now current owner completed the restoration choosing the paint and trim colors in a very elegant Ivory white over chocolate. Having been lightly used over the past many years, this example includes receipts and records. Of particular note is that the engine was rebuilt approximately 400 miles ago by Jerry Hjeltness, a noted Mercedes-Benz 300SL engine specialist. Also included in the sale are the original sales brochure, owners manual, shop manual and parts book. Christie's recommends close inspection of this wonderfully preserved and well presented, long-term ownership example. Rarely do these come to market and more so with this pedigree.
