Formerly the property of Ms. Danielle Steel 1960 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD II STANDARD STEEL SALOON Chassis No. LSTB 280 Engine No. 140 BS Masons black with beige leather interior Engine: V8, overhead valve, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four-speed automatic; Suspension: front, coil springs and wishbones, rear, semi-elliptic leaf spring; Brakes; drum all round. Left hand drive. Although it looked similar to the first series of Silver Cloud, the Silver Cloud II, introduced in September 1959, marked the beginning of a new era for the Rolls-Royce Motor Car Company. In response to demands for greater power, particularly in the face of new competition from bigger, smoother-engined American rivals, Rolls-Royce designed an all new, light alloy 6,250cc V8 for the Cloud II. It was compact and no heavier than the straight-six unit it replaced and had a dramatic effect on the car's performance. Top speed was increased from about 100mph to 115mph and the acceleration became equal to that of a respectable sports car. All this was achieved with hardly any increase in fuel consumption. The car on offer was originally built to USA specification, as it was sold new to a Mrs. Voute of San Francisco. Factory build sheets confirm that the order included Rolls-Royce electric windows, radio and provision for a Cadillac aerial to be fitted, a mirror on the drivers vent frame, and an extra radio speaker in the rear with volume control and on/off switch fitted in the rear quarter panel. A fawn rug was also supplied for the rear compartment. Finished in Masons black livery with an interior trim of beige upholstery, it was shipped to Mrs. Voute in the Spring of 1960 aboard the Pacific Reliance from Manchester to San Francisco. Little is known of its history save for the fact that the Rolls-Royce still resides in San Francisco with its current owner - indeed, it was formerly owned by Ms. Danielle Steel, successful author of 65 novels and owner of some Sixties classic cars. The condition of the Rolls-Royce appears in keeping with its mileage of about 110,000. American optional white-band tires are fitted and the car has darkened windows that provide the dual benefit of privacy and protection from the hot California sun. We understand that the car is in good running order and has been maintained and serviced accordingly. These handsome motor cars still eclipse their more modern counterparts and always attract admiring comment. Driving one provides a feel of earlier vintage Rolls-Royce motoring, while at the same time providing the occupants a sense of occasion on every outing. WITHOUT RESERVE
