Thomas Forrest, a navigator engaged in the new colony of Balambangan, was selected by the East India Company in 1774 to lead an expedition to New Guinea, with the objective of opening trade relations with the natives. The work contains a vocabulary of the Magindano language in the appendix (pp.443-458) and a survey of voyages made to New Guinea in the introduction.
