Col. 61st NY; an outstanding officer "inscribed on the annals of American military history a record seldom if ever equaled by a volunteer soldier." Wounded four times, Miles earned a CMOH for Chancellorsville (1892) and three brevets. A stellar Indian War career blemished only by accepting the surrender of Geronimo and then imprisoning him in distant Alabama. Maj. Gen. Ormsby M. Mitchell '25, carte with applied paper label on verso from Henry Miner's Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA; accomplished astronomer, Mitchell saw limited service in Alabama before dying of yellow fever in 1862. Anthony view of Maj. Gen. Geo. W. Morell '31; commanded a 5th Corps division in 1862, career ruined by testimony given at the Fitz John Porter court martial.
