A Junior Clerk by occupation, he entered into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 26 July 1910, gaining the rank of Able Seaman whilst in H.M.S. Duncan in May 1913. With the onset of war he was serving aboard H.M.S. Endeavour, remaining with her until May 1915. He served in the destroyer H.M.S. Phoenix from December 1915 to October 1916 and was advanced to Petty Officer in February 1917 while stationed at the shore base for the Dover Patrol, Attentive II. He returned to Phoenix from August 1917 and was serving with her on 14 May 1918 when, while patrolling the Otranto Barrage, she was torpedoed amidships by the Austro-Hungarian submarine SM U-27. H.M.A.S. Warrego made an unsuccessful attempt to tow her to Valona but she sank within sight of the port. The crew had been taken off before she capsized, and there were only two fatalities; a Leading Stoker and an Engine Room Artificer. She was the only British warship ever to be sunk by the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Turner was commended for his conduct on the occasion of the loss of the Phoenix and was awarded the Russian Cross of St. George, an award verified by his service record which confirms it to be ‘in recognition of valuable services rendered to the cause of Russia’. In July 1918 Turner joined the cruiser H.M.S. Blenheim, remaining with her until the end of hostilities and through to July 1919. The following years saw him aboard the minesweeper Chepstow, the light cruiser Birmingham and the heavy cruiser Hawkins. He then served with the battle cruiser H.M.S. Repulse between July 1926 and September 1928, during which time he was advanced Chief Petty Officer in November 1926 and received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in September 1927. He died in 1973 in Kent.
