Though preceded by the Tuttle catalogues, first published in the 1930s, the 1946 Heartman catalogue has become a unique classic because of the unique rarities rescued by Heartman, a German immigrant and Schomburg colleague, from the Southern junk pile, when he relocated from New York to New Orleans and Mississippi. That 200-page imprint has been called “an important bibliography on Black cultural history.” Not until the 1960s, with the dawn of the modern civil rights era, did supplementary catalogues begin to appear, which, for example, highlighted the writings of W.E.B.DuBois Lot Amendments Condition: Heartman catalogue spine worn at edges; few ink and pencil notes in text.
