Four Inscribed Civil War Cards, 1863, taken from a dead Confederate soldier at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Jack of spades on the face reads, "taken from the jacket of a dead rebble on the battlefield of dutton hill, March 31st, 1863." The back also reads, "Taken from the jacket of a dead rebble on the battlefield of Dutton hill," plus the date and name, " March 31, 1863, E. B. Brigham, Louisville, Ky." The ten of diamonds reads, "This ten of diamonds was picked from the battlefield where it was left by some rebel in their hasty flight. Captured and preserved by A. J. Evans then of Genl Gillmores Escort." The 4 and 2 of diamonds read, "Picked up on the battlefield of Dutton's Hill, Ky, 1863." A. J. Evans was a member of the staff of Union General Quincy Adams Gillmore who, with a force of 1,250 men, routed 1,550 Confederate cavalry under General John Pegram in a five-hour battle on March 30, 1863 at Dutton's Hill near Crab Orchard, Pulaski County, Kentucky. The cards possibly were made by L. I. Cohen, NY, since there is no known Southern card maker of the time period. The patriotic back design on the cards contains eagles, stars, flags, and the bust of an unidentified figure. Some foxing, single pin hole on each card.
