Four Magnificent Albums Compiled by an Australian Nurse, Miss Matilda McNeill, in the Boer War and Great War A large green cloth-bound photograph album, 28 leaves, containing approximately 175 images, mainly of Barberton, its hospital, the staff and patients, but also a fine assortment of military personnel who passed through the town in the course of the Boer War, and other locations such as Estcourt, Mooi River and scenes aboard the Hospital Ship Orcana , the majority captioned with relevant identities; together with her Boer War period autograph book, with a mass of entries from Officers and men who stayed at Barberton Hospital, including amusing verses and the odd drawing, many of them with regimental details; a similar book for the Great War period, this incorporating a much wider range of drawings (and even watercolours); and a fourth album covering a more general time-span and subject matter, with embroidered cover, among more notable entries being the autograph of Edward, Prince of Wales (afterwards King Edward VIII), and a letter from King George VI's Private Secretary, typed on The White Train during the Royal Visit to South Africa in 1947, in which he regrets that His Majesty would not be able to sign her album, this too with a mass of verse and drawings, the whole providing a quite unique and fascinating record of a nurse's wartime experiences (4)
