FOXE, John (1516-1587). The First Volume of the Ecclesiastical history contaynyng the Actes and Monumentes of thynges passed in every kynges tyme in this Realme ... Newly recognized and inlarged. London: John Day 1570. Volume 1 only (of 2), 2 o (365 x 240 mm). Engraved title with royal arms printed on verso, large folding engraved tableau of persecutions, engraved plate of the poisoning of King John 19 half-page engravings in text of various scenes of martyrdom and penance, 13 small engravings in text, 4-, 6- and 12-line initial capitals and decorative tailpieces, all colored by a contemporary hand. (Front and end matter, including title, parted, large table creased and with tape repairs along folds on verso, various other creases, small tears and soiling.) 17th-century calf (covers detached, mostly perished). Provenance : illegible contemporary ownership signature on title; Lionel H. Pries (bookplate). Second edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs , with contemporary coloring, after the first edition of 1563.
