FRANCE] VOLTAIRE, Francois Marie Arouet (1694-1778), French writer . Autograph document signed ("Voltaire"), n.p., 3 July 1773. 1 page, 8vo (100 x 150 mm.), mounted on larger sheet, in French. VOLTAIRE'S FINANCIAL ACCOUNT OF 1773. A statement made by Voltaire in regards to money he earned and money spent in 1773. Now in the last decade of his life, Voltaire had established himself as a prominent contributor to the works and ideas of the philosophes, a group of French intellectuals, including Rousseau and Diderot, who challenged Old Regime society based upon Enlightenment ideals. Voltaire's criticism of the French monarchy had led to his imprisonment in the Bastille and temporary exile from France during his lifetime. In this document, Voltaire notes several exchanges of money, made specifically with a Mr. Rozé. -- [LOUIS XIV (1638-1715), King of France ].
