Now in the last decade of his life, Voltaire had established himself as a prominent contributor to the works and ideas of the philosophes, a group of French intellectuals, including Rousseau and Diderot, who challenged Old Regime society based upon Enlightenment ideals. Voltaire's criticism of the French monarchy had led to his imprisonment in the Bastille and temporary exile from France during his lifetime.
