Saint Jerome
oil on canvas 55.0 x 61.0 cm
Francesco Bassano the Younger, nicknamed Francesco Giambattista da Ponte came from a family of painters. His father Jacopo Bassano was his first teacher. Among his most significant works are part of the decoration of the Doges’ Palace in Venice. Jerome was a Christian writer, theologian, and translator of the Bible. The Catholic Church considers him, along with Sts. Ambrose, Augustine and Gregory the Great, to be one of the four western Fathers of the Church. He was probably the most talented expert in languages in the Christian world during the 4th and 5th centuries, and was only one of the Fathers of the Church who spoke and wrote Hebrew perfectly. The painting shows him studying of the Holy Scriptures. The scene is executed in earthy tones with an emphasis on his distinctive characteristic red cloak, because according to tradition, Jerome was a Cardinal.
