(Design : 20th Century to the Contemporary, 29th April 2021) FRANCIS SULTANA (MALTESE B.1971) BRITAIN FRANCIS SULTANA (MALTESE-BRITISH B.1971) BRITAIN: A bespoke 'Phillipo' armchair, with raised back and shaped arms on a square base, on textured tapering patinated bronze feet, with back and seat cushion, upholstered in woven textured blue, white and black wool, with rectangular blue velvet and silk baluster cushion, with original dust cover 77cm high x 77cm wide x 85cm deep Proveance: Purchased from Francis Sultana in 2015, a copy of the receipt is available to view Note: Francis Sultana is a furniture and interior designer based in St James’s, London, his atelier studio is in the same building as David Gill Gallery, of which Sultana is also Artistic Director. His formative years were spent working alongside designers and artists such as Zaha Hadid Mattia Bonetti Michele Oka Doner Sir David Chipperfield and Grayson Perry One of only a handful of UK designers to be featured in Architectural Digest USA’s annual AD100, Francis Sultana is cited as one of Wallpaper’s Top 20 Interior Designers and is listed on House & Garden's Top 100 and in AD France Top 100 Interior Designers annual list. He was the only British designer invited to join AD Collections in Paris and his work continues to garner him a global and very loyal following. The Times says he is "a furniture designer and decorating mastermind" and also mentions his long list of famous clients which includes both Madonna and Annie Lennox. The Financial Times How To Spend It magazine said "his baroque-meets-pop art style is making grand statements in an ever-widening circle of homes." Francis is the Ambassador of Culture for Malta, where he sits on the board of MICAS, Malta's new museum space which opens in 2022. Francis co-founded the Design Fund for the Victoria & Albert Museum and now sits on the International Council for the museum. He also sits on the International Council for the Design Museum London. Francis is co-head of the Cultural and Social Affairs Committee for the Serpentine Galleries.
