73 mounted etchings (of the original 250) by Frans Balthazar Solvyns (just over half of them hand-colored), presented as a plates-only volume. Plates measure approx: 36.8x24.8 cm (14½x9¾"). (Folio) 43x28.5 cm (17x11¼"), modern quarter leather and cloth boards. Housed in a pocket at the front pastedown is a collection of manuscript and typescript leaves from 1929 with the following information about the artist. "Frans Baltasar Solvyns, painter and engraver, born in Antwerp, 1760, died in 1824. Pupil of Sertemont, further studies under Vincent in Paris. Made a Captain of Fort Lillo & Gov. of the palace at Laeken. After the Revolution he followed the Eng. Admiral Popham to India where he made numerous drawings of ethnographical interest..." Etchings are presumed to have been from the 1799 edition, the work having first been published in 1796.
