FRANTISEK TICHY (1896–1961) ACROBATS Starting price: 70 000 CZK (2 800 EUR) Hammer price: 95 000 CZK (3 800 EUR) Description dimensions: 26 x 33 cm (h x w) period: 1943 Ink combined with tempera and sepia. Signed lower left: “Tichý 43”. This colored ink drawing is an excellent example of the artistic skill of František Tichý, a leading figure in the Czech avant-garde of the 1940s. This accurate sketch of two acrobats, portrayed using the simplest forms of expression, fully conveys the authenticity of the environment and the seeming urgency of human fate. The value of the work is increased by the unique drawing on the obverse side, which was intended to be a basis for a cartoon of a mosaic of Saint Francis for the Capuchin monastery in the Prague Castle district. Inscription on back by PhDr. František Dvořák exhibited at Vilímek Gallery in 1943.
