FRED TAYLOR (1875-1963) [NEW WORKS.] 1923. 40x50 inches, 101 1/2x127 cm. John Waddington Ltd, Leeds. Condition B+: restored losses in margins, some slightly into image; repaired tears, creases and overpainting in margins and image; repaired pin holes in corners. "The Hampstead Tube was extended overground from Golders Green to Edgware in 1923-4, prompting new development in what had been open countryside around every station. Fred Taylor's poster makes the point without the need for a single word of copy. A brand new tube station appears at the centre of a bustling suburban building site" (Underground p. 47). This, "the best of the construction period posters . . . shows a newly built station at the centre of frenzied house building activity. Dominated by the roundel logo, the station is positioned as both the agent of progress and a reassuring presence in the midst of a rapidly changing scene. No other words are necessary to convey the Tube's impact on the area" (London Transport p. 119). London Transport p. 119 , Underground p. 47.
