Né en 1841 et destiné à la médecine par sa famille, Frédéric Bazille ne peut résister à l'appel de la peinture, sa vraie vocation. En 1862, il s'installe à Paris et intègre l'atelier du peintre Gleyre où il rencontre Monet et Renoir, avec lesquels il partagera un atelier dès 1865. Très vite, il fait partie d'un groupe composé de grands talents en devenir puisque s'y côtoient notamment Degas, Sisley, Manet, Cézanne, ou Pissarro. Grand admirateur de Delacroix, sa silhouette nous est familière puisqu'il servira de modèle à Monet pour «le déjeuner sur l'herbe», et sera portraituré à différentes reprises par ses amis peintres, notamment Renoir. Lui-même se représente dans son atelier en 1870, rue de la Condamine, accompagné de Monet, Manet, Zola et Renoir. Etoile filante de la scène picturale, puisqu'il meurt à 29 ans lors de la guerre de 1870, il annonce ce que sera l'impressionnisme par son choix de sujets axés sur la vie contemporaine, les tonalités claires de sa palette et son rejet de la peinture académique. Sa modernité dans la forme ou dans le choix des sujets ne lui fait pas pour autant oublier l'importance de la ligne. Il s'attache ainsi à restituer la réalité tangible ne voulant pas «peindre seulement l'apparence des choses». Le portrait de militaire que nous présentons peut être rapproché d'un portrait d'Alphonse Tissié daté de 1868-1869 et conservé au musée Fabre de Montpellier. La modernité de ce tableau, sa fluidité confirme l'opinion de Camille Pissarro «Il était l'un des plus doués parmi nous»... Born in 1841 and destined for medicine by his family, Frédéric Bazille cannot resist the call of painting, his true vocation. He moved to Paris in 1862 and joined the studio of Gleyre where he met Monet and Renoir, with whom he was to share a studio as of 1865. Very soon, he became part of a group of highly talented artists and, in particular, mixed with Degas, Sisley, Manet, Cezanne and Pissarro. A great admirer of Delacroix, Bazille's silhouette is familiar to us as he served as a model in Manet's Luncheon on the Grass, and was repeatedly by his artist friends, by Renoir in particular. He represented himself in his studio in rue de la Condamine in 1870, accompanied by Monet, Manet, Zola and Renoir. A shooting star of the art scene due to his early death at 29 years during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, his work prefigures what was to become known as Impressionism thanks to his choice of subjects taken from contemporary life, the light hues of his palette and his rejection of Academic painting. His modernity in terms of style and subject didn't however lead him to forget the importance of the line. He sought to restitute tangible, concrete nature of reality, not wanting to «paint only the appearance of things.» The portrait of a military that we are presenting can be likened to a portrait of Alfonso Tissié dated 1868-1869, belonging to the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. The modern nature of this painting as well as its fluent lines confirm Camille Pissarro's opinion when he said of Bazille, «He was one of the most gifted among us». «Il était l'un des plus doués parmi nous» Camille Pis
