FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF EDINBURGH, MAY 1890 A Victorian Scottish Silver rectangular Freedom Casket, the sides repoussé, chased and engraved with foliate scrolls, the front and back with the arms of the City of Edinburgh, on stepped base with four foliate and scroll legs, the domed hinged cover engraved with foliate scrolls and inscription 'Casket presented by the Corporation of the City of Edinburgh along with the Burgess Ticket conferring the Freedom of the City on Henry Morton Stanley Esq r e. 11th June 1890 the Right Honourable John Boyd Lord Provost', with finial of a lion rampant with shield, maroon velvet interior, maker's mark of Marshall & Son, Edinburgh, 1889, in original leather box (damaged). 10 7/8in. (27.5cm.) long, 50oz. (1,576gr.) gross. Enclosed is the manuscript document admitting H.M. Stanley, 'a Man distinguished by unrivalled travels and discoveries in Africa', a Burgess and Guild Brother of the City dated 6th May 1890.
