FRENCH CONSTITUTION -- Constitution Française, Présentée le 3 Septembre 1791, et acceptée par le Roi Les 13 & 14 du même mois. Nancy: widow of Leclerc and Bontoux, [n.d. but 1791]. 12° (130 x 78mm). Collation: π 2 A-E 1 2 F 1 0 (including first blank). Contemporary inlaid Revolutionary binding by Dufey fils, of Nancy: red morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet border, the corners decorated with a flowerhead, a central inlaid oval panel of blue-green morocco tooled with a wreath lettered "Constitution Francaise 1791", surrounding a central area lettered "La Loi et le Roi", the flat spine divided into eight compartments by double or triple fillets, four compartments onlaid in green morocco, lettered in one "Vivre libre ou mourir", the others decorated, the four remaining compartments with repeat pattern in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, g.e., signed with label "Dufey fils, Relieur à Nancy", modern cloth box. A FINE EXAMPLE OF A SIGNED INLAID FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY BINDING on a provincial imprint of the constitution of September 3, 1791. Gruel describes this volume, and reproduces the central motif from the covers in his Manuel.. de l'amateur de reliures , 1889 pp.90 and 152. Ramsden owned another example of Dufey's work, and had seen a third; he postulates that Dufey was working as late as 1817.
