French School Circa 1700 Marie-Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, presented with a Letter by Cupid Circa 1700 Marie-Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, presented with a Letter by Cupid Inscribed in ink on the panel to which the piece is mounted: Miniature of La Duchesse de Bourgogne/Petitot Landscape by Largelliere Gouache with gilding on vellum laid to wood panel 9 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches (23.5 x 31.1 cm) Provenance: Captain Bertram Currie, Dingley Hall, Market Harborough, sale, 1953 In 1697 the twelve-year-old Marie-Adelaide of Savoy married the fifteen-year-old Duke of Burgundy, grandson of Louis XIV. Her gaiety and animation made her a great favorite of the king. In 1711, an outbreak of smallpox brought about her and her husband's death, leaving the elderly King with only one great-grandson, the future Louis XV, as his heir. C
The vellum support is mounted on a piece of heavy paper, which is in turn mounted on the backing panel. So abrasion around the edges; a few miniscule spots, possibly tiny ink spatters. Colors extremely fresh and bright.
