FRENCH SCIENCE-- 18th & 19th CENTURY. A collection of approximately 19 autograph letters by scientists and mathematicians including: François Gigot de la PEYRONIE (1678-1747, surgeon to Louis XV). Autograph letter signed to the Surgeon-Major at Rouen, n.p., October 1741, replying to a letter about surgical instruments, with detailed advice for an operation for the removal of kidney stones, 'Si vous pouvés ouvrir la vescie toujours dans le meme endroit et y faire une incision suffisante pour le passage d'une grosse pierre, vous ne devés pas procurer d'obstacles pour l'extraction de la pierre; je crois que la bride qui vous a arreté dans l'extractions des pierres, par cette methode, venoit du muscle erecteur, qu'on ne peut couper sans inconvenient ... ', 3½ pages, 4to , bifolium; and letters by Antoine-Augustin PARMENTIER (commenting flatteringly on [Cretté de Palluel]'s work, 'je ne doute pas que Vos observations Judicieuses ne déterminent de bonnes Lois.
