FREZIER, Amedee François (1682-1773). Relation du voyage de la mer du sud, aux côtes du Chily et du Perou, fait pendant les années 1712, 1713 & 1714 . Paris: Jean-Geoffrey Nyon, Etienne Ganeau and Jacques Guillau, 1716. 4 o (248 x 190 mm). 37 engraved maps, plans and plates, including 18 folding. (Some occasional pale spotting, generally clean and crisp.) Contemporary French calf, spine gilt (joints slightly rubbed, few scuffs to sides). Provenance : Z.M. Nürnberg (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Frezier was sent in 1712 to Chile and Peru in order to establish defences along the coasts. He studied the ports, towns and various places he visited and collected scientific material. Frézier was well-received by the governor at Santa Catharina, after they had been attacked by Duguay-Trouin. He writes about the slave trade, notes the large Jewish population in Bahia, describes the churches and commerce. Alden and Landis 716/55; Borba de Moraes I:281; Nissen ZBI 1433; Sabin 25924.
