EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 24 ORIGINAL PENCIL AND PEN-AND-INK SKETCHES BY JOHN LEECH mounted to size. Contemporary dark brown morocco gilt, covers with strapwork decoration and flower tool, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with further strapwork, turn-ins with similar decoration, original cloth covers and spines bound in at rear, t.e.g., by Tout. Provenance : C.W.Cowan (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The sketches include two drawings of Mr. Punch: 'Punch the Jolly Old Waterman' and 'Mr Cardinal Punch'. A'BECKETT, Gilbert Abbott. The Comic History of England . London: Bradbury, Agnew, & Co., [n.d.]. 2 volumes, 8° (210 x 135mm.). Half-title, title in red and black, wood-engraved illustrations and 20 hand-coloured etched plates after John Leech Modern red polished calf gilt, original cloth upper cover and spine bound at back of first volume, g.e., by Root & Son. This issue appeared in a single volume, but is here rebound in two. Tooley 297. (4)
