FROM THE CARSON-PETTIT COLLECTION 1969 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SEL 6.3 LITRE SEDAN Chassis No. 109 018 12 001589 Engine No. 100981 12 001505 Dark blue with tan interior Engine: V8, single overhead camshaft per bank, Bosch fuel injected, 6,332cc giving 250bhp at 4,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: four wheel disc; Suspension: independent all round. Left hand drive. For many years the 6.3 liter version of the 300SEL was Germany's fastest luxury sedan, with a top speed of 140 mph. Described as giving a Porche-like performance with S class comfort and refinement, it could accelerate to 60mph in 6.5 seconds, then an unequalled feat for a substantial four door luxury sedan. (The 300SEL has the same engine used in the larger 600 model sedans.) Various types of 300SEL's were homologated for racing and proved extremely competitive. Road and Track termed the car, "merely the greatest sedan in the world", and it continued in production until 1972, accounting for 6,526 sales. In 1956, James T. Carson and Horace Pettit, Jr., two car enthusiasts, founded an important car dealership, Carson-Pettit, Inc., in Philadelphia's Main Line. From time to time, whenever a particularly fine example of significant model car was traded in, it would be retained instead of resold. Not surprisingly, a majority of these cars were Mercedes-Benz', many of which had been sold new and serviced by Carson-Pettit. The above 6.3 sedan and a 1965 230SL coupe roadster (lot 41) in this sale are two prime examples of such cars--both were sold new by Carson-Pettit. This particular 300SEL 6.3 was purchased from Mr. Carson by Walter Pew of the Sun Oil Company family. Mr. Pew had an enduring fascination with great automobiles and owned many unusual cars. He traded an S class Bentley for this 6.3. In 1986, at an advanced age, he traded this 6.3 for a 560SL. At that time this 6.3 had gone only 18,000 miles. The car was always brought to the dealership for service, and these records accompany it. In the interim the car has been driven less than 5000 miles by Mr. Carson, and the air suspension has been fitted with new air bags, air valves and a new battery. The car is fitted with special wood trim used on the 300SEL class, power steering, four speed automatic transmission, power windows and door locks, tinted glass, and leather interior in nearly new condition. It has been attractively hand striped in pale yellow, with matching hub caps striped in dark blue. A most exciting and gratifying car to drive, it has, unlike most extant 6.3's, never been driven hard or been less than meticulously serviced.
