Dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin. (Upper blank margins of leaves to I4 with stab hole.) Contemporary Parisian red morocco, panelled in gilt with the centrally-placed ARMS OF CARDINAL MAZARIN (Olivier 1529, fer 3), the flat spine tooled along its length with a decorative roll within a border of double fillets and pointillé fillets, g.e. (upper cover with stab hole). Provenance : Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-1661, binding); J.F.Vandevelde (inscription, dated Dresden 1802); Jean Furstenberg (booklabel). DEDICATION COPY: Mazarin amassed two great libraries: the first (presumably including this volume) was sold by order of the French parliament in 1652. On his return to power in 1653 Mazarin set about rebuilding the collection, and by 1660 the second library rivalled the first.
