GAIMARD, Joseph Paul (1796-1858). Voyage en Islande et au Groenland exécuté pendant les années 1835 et 1836 sur la corvette La Recherche . Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1838-1852. First edition of an important scientific voyage to Iceland and Greenland. Gaimard, who had sailed as a surgeon under Freycinet and as chief surgeon on Dumont-Durville’s expedition to the Pacific, was appointed by the French King in 1835 to command a crew on an exploratory voyage to the North Atlantic. As well as the scientific goals of the expedition, Gaimard was tasked with searching for Jules de Blosseville, who disappeared aboard the Lilloise with his crew of 83 men in August 1833. While no traces of Blosseville’s expedition were found, Gaimard’s team of French and Scandinavian scientists and artists compiled what was the definitive study of the islands at the time. Nissen ZBI 1468. Together 16 volumes, comprising 13 text volumes, octavo (250 x 165mm) and 3 atlas volumes, folio (522 x 342mm). Text: Histoire du voyage , 3 vols., engraved frontispiece portrait of Jules de Blosseville, one other plate and one folding table; Journal du voyage , one vol., folding map and 2 folding plates; Zoologie et médecine , one vol., folding table; Physique , 2 vols., 10 engraved plates; Histoire de l’Islande , 2 vols.; Littérature Islandaise , 2 vols.; Minéralogie et Géologie , 2 vols. (variable spotting and browning, partly unopened); atlas: a total of 223 engraved plates, comprising: Atlas historique , 2 vols., title vignettes and 151 engraved plates including engraved title and portrait of the author; Atlas zoologique , one vol., 72 engraved plates, including 23 in 2 states, many coloured, plates 1-6 and 6bis bound in Atlas historique vol.1 (one marginal repair, two plates stained in margins; without the octavo Géologie et Minéralogie atlas volume). Text volumes in original printed wrappers or boards, partly unopened (some spines darkened, one small repaired tear at spine, one volume with lower board decorated with floral pattern in ink, occasionally lightly rubbed); atlas volumes in modern blue quarter calf, red morocco lettering pieces. Provenance : Adrien de Gasparin (ink inscription on one text volume) – Bibliothèque de Narbonne (ink inscription on one text volume) -- Port de Brest Bibliothèque (ink stamps on 2 plates in Atlas zoologique ) – some text volumes with shelfmarks and erased ink library stamps – evidence of removed stamp on title in Atlas zoologique .
