GAIMARD, Joseph Paul (1796-1858). Voyages de la Commission scientifique du Nord en Scandinavie, en Laponie, au Spitzberg et aux Feroe, pendant les années 1838-1840, sur la corvette La Recherche, commandée par Fabvre . Paris: Arthus Bertrand, [1842-1855]. First edition, complete with all parts, of Gaimard's second scientific expedition to Scandinavia onboard La Recherche. Departing from Le Havre, Gaimard sailed to Norway, and thence, via the North Cape, to Sptizbergen. He returned to Lapland, where he made extensive observations, travelling through Finland and Sweden. The second part of the voyage commenced from Denmark, and sailed to the Faroe Islands, before returning to mainland Europe, with visits to Hamburg and Lubeck, before exploring the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coastline of the Baltic. The experiments conducted during the expedition led to discoveries in the fields of oceanography, atmospheric and glaciological studies, and zoology. Extensive observations were also made of the aurora borealis, leading to several beautiful lithographic illustrations of the phenomenon based on sketches by Louis Bevalet. There are an extensive number of views of Sweden and Finland, as well as of Poland – including a few spectacular plates of the subterranean passages in Polish mines – and Russia. BM(NH) II, 607; Nissen ZBI 1469. Together 22 volumes, comprising 16 text volumes, octavo (229 x 146mm) and 6 atlas volumes, folio (536 x 370mm). Text: Relation du voyage , 2 vols., wood-engraved frontispieces; Littérature Scandinavie , one vol.; Histoire de la Scandinavie , one vol.; Géologie, Minéralogie et Métallurgie , one vol.; Aurores Boréales , one vol.; Géologie, Minéralogie, Métallurgie et Chimie , one vol.; Magnétisme terrestre , 3 vols.; Astronomie et Hydrographie , one vol.; Météorologie , 3 vols.; Geographie Physique , 2 vols., folding plate (scattered spotting and browning); atlas: a total of 449 engraved plates, comprising: Atlas historique , 2 vols., 310 plates; Atlas de zoologie, one vol., 76 hand-coloured plates; Atlas de géologie, 2 vols., 32 plates, of which 2 folding; Atlas de physique, one vol., 31 plates, of which 1 folding (possibly without titles in the Zoologie , some browning, one long repaired tear).
