I Giunti 105. 5 volumes, 2 (324 x 228mm). Collation as Ahmanson-Murphy, except vol. II, quire gg, which is a quire of 10 (not 8) leaves, with gg2, presumably a blank, removed. Roman type (title, dedication, contents, colophons), greek type (text). Aldine device f1 on title and last page of each volume (on Yyy10v of vol.V). 58 lines and headline. Initial spaces with guide-letter. (Lacking II: o 4, IV: 4-5 8 and V:Gg 8 and Yyy10, and without blanks III: and IV:, PPp8 and V:Yyy10, small wormhole in first half of vol. I, some worming in first 5 leaves of vol. III, some browning, occasionally heavy in vols. I, III and IV, some staining and spotting, heavier in vol. II, dampstain at inner margin and lower corner in vol.I, first 2 quires of vol. II, at fore-edge of vol. III and some upper corners of vol. V; a few tears, usually repaired, final leaf of vol. IV somewhat soiled.) 18th-century mottled calf, gilt spines with 3 lettering-pieces, red edges (some wear at extremities). Provenance : some marginal annotations in vol. I. EDITIO PRINCEPS, of all Galenic texts except the Therapeutica and the Therapeutica ad Glauconema and the spurious De philosophia historia , which had appeared previously. 'For nearly fifteen hundred years his authority was unassailable and every medical question was automatically referred to him: there was no appeal. Galen was a good observer and investigator, and some of his works in physiology and anatomy - he left a brilliant study of the brain - in neurology and diagnosis are of especially high quality' (PMM). His works may rightly be considered the 'Bible' of classical medicine. RARE, in the past 3 decades only one other copy (Honeyman) has been offered at auction.
