Provenance : early ownership inscription to title-page (illegible) -- number in blue ink to upper panel. SECOND EDITION, AUGMENTED AND PUBLISHED IN THE SAME YEAR AS THE FIRST, of Galileo's pioneering treatise on hydrostatics. In this work Galileo attacked Aristotle's opinion regarding the behaviour of bodies in water, defending the theory of Archimedes. He set out to demonstrate that a small amount of water could raise and sustain a much heavier solid body. The work was the subject of considerable interest, in part because of 'the many things contained in it which at first sight appeared incredible or paradoxical, but which could be verified by simple experiments requiring no special equipment' (Drake, Galileo at Work , 179). This second edition includes additional material -- distinguished by its presentation in roman type, whereas the original text is in italic -- and extra illustrative material. The work aroused considerable controversy. Carli-Favaro 10 (48); Cinti 98 (35); Norman I 308 (856); Riccardi I 509.
