Gallantry. A WWII North Africa, 8th Army, 7th Brigade ‘Desert Rats’ Operation Crusader MM group to Corporal M. Riley, Royal Tank Regiment. Military Medal, G.VI.R. (410616 Cpl. M. Riley. R. Tank R.), 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Defence and War Medals, good very fine. M.M. London Gazette 9.9.1942 "On the morning of 22nd November 1941, at Bir-er-Regham-el-Garbi a small convoy loaded with 25 Pounder ammunition was sent forward from Brigade ‘B’ Echelon for urgent replenishment. On the way this party was surrounded by enemy Armoured Fighting Vehicles and the Officer’s and three leading vehicles blown up. Corporal Riley with great presence of mind took over command of the rest of the convoy and signalled them to follow him. Unable to go forward owing to being in direct line of fire of our own Armoured Fighting Vehicles which were engaging the enemy column, he showed great coolness and presence of mind by breaking through and guiding his convoy back to Brigade ‘B’ Enchelon." 410616 Michael Riley was awarded his Military Medal for his bravery in the field in North Africa 22nd November 1941 during Operation Crusader which led to the relief of the besieged Tobruk, this operation lasted from 18th November to 30th December 1941.
