Title: Gallerie Des Modes et Costumes Francais. Volume 4 Author: Watteau, Jean-Antoine Place: [Paris?] Publisher: Date: [c.1790's?] Description: No title page. With 64 hand-colored copper-engraved costume fashion plates by Watteau. (Folio) 15¼x11¼, bound in late nineteenth century quarter black morocco and light blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), French rococo artist whose charming and graceful paintings show his interest in theater and ballet. Watteau is best known for his “fetes galantes,” romantic and idealized scenes that depict elaborately costumed ladies and gentlemen at play in fanciful outdoor settings, of which can be seen here. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine faded, ends chipped, joints split, occasional slight color retouching to leather; old paint and stain spots to preliminary and last few leaves as well as to lower fore-edge; plate images fine and bright; else very good overall.
