Condition : second and third leaves of the Dedication bound out of order (i.e. following the first text leaf), Dedication leaves on thicker paper and supplied from another copy?, scattered minor foxing. galloway’s first book and a significant critique of proprietary government. “Lawrence Wroth … shows conclusively that this indignant reply to Dr. Smith was by Joseph Galloway [and not by Benjamin Franklin which had long been assumed]. Galloway, the friend of Franklin, became known as the most influential of the American Loyalists and died in exile, stripped of his wealth. His antagonist here, William Smith the ablest man in the proprietary party and one of the ablest men of eighteenth-century America, was still influential after the Revolution, though his loyalty was under suspicion” (Streeter).
